The clever ensemble and use of space in Slate brings to mind chic restaurants in NYC. It is easy to appreciate the overall design of Slate, from the gas lamps to the wood tones that permeate the restaurant.
To begin our evening, we ordered two cocktails: Going For Gold and The Thyme Traveler; both choice cocktails with witty names. Going For Gold, consisting of Espirito Cachaca, Mango Peppercorn Syrup, Lime, and Bubbles, possesses gentle kick.
The Thyme Traveler, with infused St. George Ca. Vodka, Giffard Lich-Li, Lemon, Matcha Green Tea, and Plum Bitters, is a refreshing treat, especially from the Florida Heat.
For our appetizers, we experienced the Deviled Eggs and Fried Green Tomatoes. The colorful Deviled Eggs, with Rosemary Bread Crumbs and Pickled Red Onion, were not only attractive, but certainly toothsome. The Pickled Red Onion added a pleasant bite to the Deviled Eggs.
The Fried Green Tomatoes come with Feta Cheese, Peppadew, and Spicy Buttermilk Dressing. These are some of the finest fried green tomatoes around. Peppadew, those delightful little peppers, “sweet piquante peppers” to be precise, originally hail from South Africa.
The Seared Yellow Fin Tuna, accompanied with a beautiful array Peanuts, Bibb Lettuce, Pineapple, Avocado, and Chili-Orange Vinaigrette, exceeded expectations. The Citrus accents from the Chili-Orange Vinaigrette added a fragrant touch to the Tuna. The texture of the Peanuts and Pineapple were a wonderful contrast. The overall taste of the dish was evocative of Hawaiian/Asian Fusion.
The Flat Iron Steak, with Ramp Béarnaise and House Cut Fries, tasted superb. One can tell the steak is cooked over a wood burning grill as it retains that unique taste only wood burning grills can contribute. The inclusion of Ramp Béarnaise is fantastic. Yes, Ramp Béarnaise – Ramp, that wild onion/leek that is burgeoning from the foodie onto the mainstream scene. That is one of the delights of Slate. Slate is keeping you tickled with gorgeous tasting House Cut Fries, but also dazzling the “foodie-within-us-all”.
The Chocolate & Coffee Pot De Crème is classic. The dessert is a chocolate and coffee lover’s dream. As you can see below, the presentation is also lovely.
A dessert that brings to mind the Fall, the Apple-Almond Galette with Brandy Vanilla Ice Cream was our favorite. The crisp Galette boasts an aromatic and ambrosial sweetness when combined with the Brandied Vanilla Ice Cream.
Slate’s irresistible menu will have you coming back for more. Thank you for hosting us.
